What a 2-15 licence actually covers

Florida's 2-15 is the Life, Health & Variable Annuity licence. An agent holding it may sell fixed, indexed and variable annuities. The licence is issued and administered by the Florida Department of Financial Services, and every active licence is a public record.

What to check before you sign anything

• The licence is active — look the agent up by name or licence number on the FL DFS registry. An expired or suspended licence is visible there.
• Carrier appointments. An agent can only place business with carriers that have appointed them. The number and mix of appointments tells you how much of the market they can actually shop.
• The product type matches the need. Fixed, indexed and variable annuities behave very differently. Variable products are securities and carry their own registration requirements.
