Florida's 2-15 covers Life, Health & Variable Annuity. A 2-14 covers life including variable products but not health. Both are issued by the Florida Department of Financial Services and both are public records.

What to check before you sign anything

• The licence is active — verify by name or licence number on the FL DFS registry rather than taking a business card at face value.
• Carrier appointments. An agent appointed with one carrier can only offer that carrier's products. A broader appointment list means more of the market is actually available to you.
• Term versus permanent. They solve different problems and cost very differently. An agent who only ever recommends one is worth a second opinion.
